Ad-hoc tournaments without a club
Run a one-off tournament with typed player names and no group: how to create it, what it can do, and why it stays unrated and private until you share it.
When to use one
An ad-hoc tournament suits a one-off event: a school blitz, a family tournament, a trial run. You type the players' names; there is no group, no player list to keep and no rating. If you run tournaments regularly with the same players, create a group instead: its tournaments are rated. See Create a group.
Creating one
- Open My tournaments and press New ad-hoc tournament.
- Enter the Tournament name, the dates if you like, and choose the Format: all four formats work, individual or team, round robin or Swiss.
- Press Create tournament.
Any signed-in user with a confirmed email address can create one.
Typed names
- On the Players tab, under Add a player, type the Name and, if known, the Rating (100–3000; leave it blank for an unrated player), then press Add player.
- In a team tournament add them under Add a player to a team on the Teams tab.
- The same name cannot be entered twice in one tournament; letter case, extra spaces and the Turkish I / ı are not told apart.
- Rating-based tie-breaks (ARO, TPR, PTP, APRO, APPO, RTNG) cannot be used while a player is unrated.
Then follow the format's guide: round robin, Swiss or team tournaments.
Visibility
An ad-hoc tournament is private: only you see it.
- In the draft's Settings tick Public (anyone can see its public pages once a round is published).
- Once it is paired, use Make public or Make private on the Settings tab.
A public ad-hoc tournament has public pages (standings, rounds, crosstable) from its first published round; share the Public page link from its header. It is not listed under Clubs.
Limits
- Unrated: finalizing stores the final standings but changes no rating.
- At most 20 ad-hoc tournaments of yours can be open (draft or running) at a time; finalize or delete one to start another.
- Only you manage it: an ad-hoc tournament has no co-organizers.
- Typed names are shown as typed and have no player pages.
- Deleting your account deletes your ad-hoc tournaments.
