Run a team tournament

Last updated: 20 October 2026

Teams, rosters and lineups for team round robins and team Swiss: boards per match, match and game points, publishing rounds and team standings.

Formats

  • Team round robin: 3 to 16 teams meet each other once or twice. All rounds are paired at once from the FIDE Berger tables, with the teams in place of players.
  • Team Swiss: 4 to 100 teams and 3 to 15 rounds, more teams than rounds. Each round is paired by the FIDE Swiss Team Pairing System (C.04.6).

Create either with New tournament on the group's Tournaments tab, or New ad-hoc tournament for typed names, and choose the Format: Team round robin or Team Swiss.

Settings

  • Boards per match: 2 to 10 (default 4).
  • Team round robin: single or double under Round robin. Team Swiss: the number of Rounds.
  • Tie-breaks (in order): teams are ranked by match points, then by the default GP EDE EMGSB: game points, direct encounter, and a Sonneborn-Berger that multiplies each opponent's match points by the game points scored against them; EMMSB, EGMSB and EGGSB can be used too.
  • Scoring: a board won 1 game point, drawn ½, lost 0. A match won 2 match points, drawn 1, lost 0, decided by the game points of its boards. In a team round robin a bye is worth 0; in a team Swiss a bye is worth a drawn match.

Switching between an individual and a team format needs an empty draft.

Teams and rosters

  1. Open the Teams tab. Under Add a team enter the Team name and press Add team.
  2. Add the players. In a group tournament the roster is the group's players, so add them on the group's Players tab first (see Adding players); then choose the Team under Add players from the roster, tick the players and press Add selected. In an ad-hoc tournament use Add a player to a team with a typed name.
  3. The roster order is the board order. Change the numbers and press Save roster order.
  4. Each team needs at least as many players as boards, and at most 20. A player is in one team only.

Remove and Remove team work while the tournament is a draft. Once it is paired, the rosters are fixed.

Starting order

In a team round robin the Starting order tab sets the teams' start numbers: draw lots or give your own order, as for players in a round robin. A team Swiss has no starting order: round 1 numbers the teams by seed rating (the average rating of their first players, one per board), then name.

Pairing

  • Team round robin: on the Schedule tab press Pair the schedule. All rounds are paired at once.
  • Team Swiss: on the Rounds tab press Pair round 1; each next round can be paired once the previous one is published and complete. Re-pair pairs the last unpublished round again; saved lineups stay, except for a team that now gets the bye.

Pairing freezes the settings, the teams and their rosters. The first-named team of a match has White on the odd boards. Reset to draft brings the draft back while no result has been entered (team round robin) or while round 1 is the only, unpublished round (team Swiss).

If no legal pairing exists for the next round of a team Swiss, end the tournament after its last complete round (see Ending a Swiss early).

Lineups

Before a round is published, each team chooses who plays:

  1. On the schedule press Lineups next to the round.
  2. For each team choose the player on each board. A lineup keeps the roster order; choose — empty — for a board nobody plays (that board is lost by forfeit).
  3. Press Save lineup.

A team without a saved lineup plays its first players in roster order. The lineups are fixed once the round is published. Owner, admins and arbiters set lineups.

Publishing and results

  1. Publish the round: tick it and press Publish selected rounds (team round robin) or press Publish in its row (team Swiss). Publishing creates the boards: board 1 pairs the first players of the two lineups, board 2 the second ones, and so on.
  2. Press Boards, choose each board's result and press Save results.

A match counts in the standings once every one of its boards has a result.

Standings and tie-breaks

The Standings tab ranks the teams by match points, then by the tie-breaks of the settings (FIDE C.07). The Crosstable shows the game points of every match. In a team round robin a bye adds nothing to a tie-break; in a team Swiss a bye and forfeited matches count as FIDE C.07 Art. 16 says.

Finishing

When every round is published and complete, finalize the tournament. A team Swiss can first end after its last complete round. Rated games are the games inside the matches; an empty board is a forfeit and does not count. There are no team or player withdrawals in team tournaments. See Finalizing.
